A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch! This time, we're focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop, since dedicated ports are less common than on other consoles. We've compiled ten fantastic choices – four GBA and six DS – available beyond the Nintendo Switch Online app. Let's dive in! (No particular order.)
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my book, this GBA version is a worthy contender. A fun comparison piece, and arguably a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is a captivating title, enjoyable even for those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, a true successor emerged on the GBA: Mega Man Zero. This marks the beginning of a superb side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry isn't perfectly polished. Subsequent titles refine the formula, but the first game remains the ideal starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
Yes, another Mega Man entry! But Mega Man Zero and Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay, both excelling in their respective styles. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept is clever and well-executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable title.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection is a must-have, but if choosing just one, Aria of Sorrow takes the crown. For me, it even surpasses the amazing Symphony of the Night on occasion. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the addictive gameplay makes grinding worthwhile. A unique setting and hidden secrets complete this winning package. A personal favorite among GBA third-party titles.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae was a cult classic, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare gave the Half-Genie Hero a wider audience, establishing her as a console staple. This title occupies a unique space, born from the ashes of an unreleased GBA game (which, interestingly, is also getting a release soon).
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Technically a Game Boy Advance game (its original platform), this title deserves mention. You likely know Ace Attorney: charming adventure games blending investigations and dramatic courtroom scenes. Witty humor and compelling narratives make this a standout, though later installments are also strong contenders.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people, uncovering the truth behind your own death along the way. A wild ride, highly recommended.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version is a solid alternative if you lack a working DS. A superb game across the board.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three DS Castlevania games, all worth playing. Dawn of Sorrow gets a nod for its improved button controls over the original's touch controls. But play them all!
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
Another franchise that translates somewhat imperfectly outside the DS/3DS ecosystem. Atlus's adaptation is playable, however. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
