Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: mouse functionality. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests referencing polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" intended for "game console handles." This terminology, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, hints at potential mouse-like functionality for the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they may be entirely new products. The listed size (90 x 90mm) suggests the tape is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While novel for Nintendo, mouse-like controller modes aren't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement. This, coupled with the Legion GO's rumored magnetic controller rails (a feature also speculated for the Switch 2), offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
