PlayStation Classics: The SwitchArcade Hall of Fame

Author : Alexander Jan 24,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to a dwindling supply of retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural foray into the console market exceeded all expectations, resulting in a vast library of exceptional games, many still seeing re-releases. While these titles may have challenged Nintendo's dominance years ago, today they're enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order). Let the PlaySta-Show begin!

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated gem, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Playing as a charming floppy-eared creature, you navigate a dream world to thwart a looming threat. The game boasts vibrant visuals, responsive gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel doesn't quite match the original's brilliance, both titles are essential.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental title, Final Fantasy VII awakened the Western world to the JRPG genre, becoming Square Enix's most significant success and a key driver of the PlayStation's dominance. While the remake exists, this original Final Fantasy VII offers the classic experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries embraced more outlandish elements, this first installment shines with its action-packed gameplay, reminiscent of a G.I. Joe episode. The fun factor is high, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, their charm is undeniable. Vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanics, and inventive bosses create a compelling shooter experience.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid overwhelming the list with Square Enix titles, I've included only this and Final Fantasy VII. Chrono Cross, while not reaching the heights of its predecessor, Chrono Trigger, stands as a clever and visually stunning RPG. Its extensive cast of characters (though admittedly underdeveloped) and exceptional soundtrack make it a worthwhile experience.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity dictates recommending only a few to non-fans. In the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X4 stand out. X4 boasts superior cohesion compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience this for yourself.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Many PlayStation first-party titles weren't actually owned by Sony. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with engaging action. Created by the mind behind Ghosts 'n Goblins, it offers a deceptively challenging experience.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port served as the basis for this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia stands out with its bright, cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system. The collection's second game is also noteworthy.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation adventures varied in quality. The original, focusing on tomb raiding over action, arguably represents the best of the Core Design era. This collection lets you decide, encompassing the first three games.

moon ($18.99)

A lesser-known title, moon (originally Japan-only) deconstructs the traditional RPG, acting more as an adventure game. While not consistently fun, it offers a unique message and is now available in English.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch below! I appreciate your engagement throughout this series. Thanks for reading!
