This LEGO Art Vincent van Gogh – Sunflowers set is substantial, measuring 21 inches high and 16 inches wide—roughly 60% the size of the original painting. Its impressive scale positions it as a serious piece of art, not just a LEGO build, reflecting LEGO's growing appeal as an adult hobby. This isn't a toy to be tucked away; it's meant to be displayed.

Vincent van Gogh's iconic Sunflowers series, painted during his prolific Arles period, reflects his deep connection to the flower, symbolizing gratitude. He famously wrote to a friend: "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
He created four versions in August 1888, revisiting the motif in January 1889 with repetitions. The most renowned are the fourth version and its two repetitions. The original (F454) resides in London's National Gallery, one (F457) in Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic, (F458) at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum. This LEGO set, a collaboration between the Van Gogh Museum and LEGO, recreates the vibrant F458 version.

The 2,615-piece set includes 34 numbered bags and instructions with a QR code linking to a podcast exploring van Gogh's life and inspiration. The build process is cleverly structured: first, the frame, then the canvas, finally mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly authentic touch.

A delightful detail mirrors a real-life imperfection: Van Gogh added a wooden strip to the top of F458. LEGO replicates this with a separate strip, fastened with pins, using brown bricks to mimic wood. This hidden detail adds a layer of enjoyment for the builder, a subtle nod to the artist's process.

Building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, reflecting the dedication of the original artist. Take your time; this isn't a race. The wilting flowers and varied perspectives, initially seeming abstract, reveal their beauty upon stepping back, showcasing the clever design.

The completed artwork is destined for display, a point of pride. Even a week later, the three-dimensional details continue to delight. This is a superb LEGO set, highly recommended for its quality, design, and the lasting satisfaction it provides.
