At the start of Avowed, you face a crucial decision: free the suspicious prisoner Ilora from her cell in Fort Northreach, or leave her fate sealed. Your ultimate goal is to use her boat to reach Paradis, but the choice of freeing or abandoning Ilora significantly impacts your journey.
Should You Free or Leave Ilora?
While Avowed encourages roleplaying your character, freeing Ilora is strongly recommended. This choice simplifies Fort Northreach and unlocks a later side quest.
What Happens If You Free Ilora?

Freeing Ilora provides invaluable assistance in overcoming the island's challenges, including defeating Steadman Ralke, the area boss. Early in Avowed, your resources are limited, making Ilora's help essential for easier progression. Furthermore, this act of kindness unlocks the "Escape Plan" side quest later, significantly easing its completion.
How to Free Ilora

Ilora reveals the key to her cell is located in the Warden's Room. Access this room by proceeding to the hallway's end, climbing crates, jumping to the adjacent platform, and entering the passage above. Break through the boards on your right to descend into the Warden's Room. The key rests near the door. Regardless of your decision regarding Ilora, use this key to open the adjacent cell and obtain the Deerskin Gloves.
What Happens If You Don't Free Ilora?
Choosing not to free Ilora dramatically increases the difficulty of Fort Northreach and the "Escape Plan" side quest. Ironically, she won't remain imprisoned; you'll instead face her in combat, further complicating your escape. However, this path offers a grim reward: looting Ilora's corpse after defeating her.
Ultimately, the choice rests with you. However, freeing Ilora offers significant advantages throughout your Avowed adventure.
