The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken a significant step forward by enlisting John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its screenwriters. Known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein are set to bring their creative flair to this adaptation of Hasbro's iconic board game. The film will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap, adding another high-profile project to her portfolio.
In addition to their success with Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein have recently written and directed the original film Mayday. Their writing credits also include notable films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and experience in crafting engaging stories.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the big screen has been long and winding. Discussions about a Monopoly film date back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing. In 2011, Scott enlisted Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to pen the script, but that project ultimately did not materialize. Subsequent attempts included a 2015 collaboration between Lionsgate and Hasbro, with Andrew Niccol writing the script, and a 2019 announcement involving Kevin Hart and director Tim Story. However, none of these versions came to fruition.
The current push for the Monopoly movie gained momentum following Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro. This new development has revitalized efforts to finally bring this beloved game to life on screen. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm of the screenplay, fans can hope that this version of the film will successfully pass Go and deliver an entertaining cinematic experience.
