Netflix has officially announced the closure of its interactive fiction games under the Netflix Stories banner, signaling the end of a brief yet intriguing foray into narrative gaming. Despite having a solid player base, the decision to cancel Netflix Stories might come as a surprise to many fans. Let's dive into the reasons behind this move and what it means for the future of Netflix Games.
The news, initially reported by Variety, aligns with a broader strategic shift within Netflix Games. The company is now setting its sights on expanding its mobile gaming portfolio, focusing on party games, kids’ games, mainstream releases, and more interactive experiences that can be enjoyed on TV screens. This pivot indicates a clear intent to diversify and enhance the gaming offerings for its subscribers.
Boss Fight Entertainment, the creative force behind the Netflix Stories series, will continue their collaboration with Netflix on other projects, including the much-anticipated Squid Game: Unleashed.
Netflix Stories Gets Cancelled, So Is It Shutting Down?
Despite facing some criticism, Netflix Stories games have consistently ranked high among the most-played titles on the Netflix Games platform. Recent reports place it at the fourth spot in the Netflix Games top 10 carousel, which is based on player engagement rather than mere download counts.
Looking ahead, the last title in the Netflix Stories lineup will be Love Is Blind: NYC. Once this game rolls out, no further titles will be developed under the Netflix Stories banner. This announcement follows shortly after the Netflix Stories app had begun teasing its next release, The Love Contract, slated for April 8th. Unlike its predecessors, The Love Contract was not based on any existing Netflix IP but was an original romance story centered around an actress navigating a complex love triangle involving a Hollywood star and a billionaire. Unfortunately, this project has been scrapped.
While the development of new Netflix Stories games has ceased, the existing titles will remain accessible. Fans can still enjoy playing games such as Love Is Blind, Emily in Paris, Money Heist, Love Is Blind: Winter’s Kiss, Perfect Match, Sex Education, Selling Sunset, Sweet Magnolias, Virgin River, and The Perfect Couple. However, planned sequels like Outer Banks and Ginny & Georgia have been cancelled.
So, there you have it! If you're a fan of Netflix shows and haven't yet explored the Netflix Stories games, you can still check them out on the Google Play Store.
