Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances User Experience with Additional USB-C Port

Author : Christopher Apr 05,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially been unveiled, bringing with it a host of exciting new features and a fresh look at the system. Among the highlights are the new Joy-Cons, which now come equipped with optical sensors that allow them to function as a mouse. But there's another significant quality-of-life improvement that you might have overlooked in the initial reveal trailer.

Unlike its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch 2 boasts not one, but two USB-C ports on the underside of the tablet. This seemingly small change is actually a game-changer. The original Nintendo Switch's single USB-C port often required users to purchase additional, sometimes unreliable, adapters to connect multiple accessories, which could even risk damaging the console due to the complex and non-standard USB-C specification used by Nintendo.

The original Switch's USB-C port was notorious for its custom specification, which needed to be reverse-engineered by third-party manufacturers to ensure compatibility without causing damage. With the addition of a second USB-C port on the Switch 2, there's a strong indication that Nintendo might be adopting the universal USB-C standard this time around. This standard has evolved significantly since 2017, now supporting high-speed data transfer, 4K display outputs, and even the ability to connect an external GPU via Thunderbolt.

The inclusion of a second USB-C port suggests that the Switch 2 will support a wide range of connections, including external displays, networking, data transfer, and high-wattage power. The bottom port, likely to be used with Nintendo's official dock, might be more sophisticated to handle all these connections seamlessly. Meanwhile, the top port could support fast charging, display outputs, and other accessories, allowing for the simultaneous use of external power banks and other devices, significantly enhancing the user experience compared to the original console.

While we await more details on the Switch 2, such as the mysterious C button, we'll have to stay tuned for Nintendo's Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, 2025.
