The Nintendo Switch 2: A Closer Look at Size and Dimensions
The recently released Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveals a console significantly larger than its predecessor. While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, a comparison with a Genki mock-up, handled at CES 2025, provides a strong basis for estimation. The mock-up's accuracy is supported by its striking resemblance to the console shown in the trailer.
Switch 2 Screen Size:
Our estimations suggest an 8-inch screen (diagonal measurement, excluding bezels). This aligns with earlier rumors. We project the display to be approximately 177mm wide and 99mm tall. This represents a nearly 30% increase in diagonal size and a 66% increase in area compared to the original Switch's 6.2-inch display. The increase is even more dramatic compared to the Switch Lite (45% diagonal, 111% area) and the Switch OLED (14% diagonal, 30% area). While larger isn't always better, a larger screen could significantly enhance the gaming experience, provided the display quality is high.
Compared to the Steam Deck's 7-inch screen, the Switch 2's estimated 8-inch display is 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in area than the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch screen.
Overall Console Size:
The larger screen necessitates a larger console. Our measurements of the Genki mock-up, corroborated by image scaling from the trailer, suggest the Switch 2 is approximately 265mm long and 115mm tall. This is roughly a 25% increase compared to the original Switch (239mm x 102mm), making it significantly larger than the Switch Lite (61% larger) but still smaller than the Steam Deck (12% smaller). Depth is estimated to be similar to the original Switch.
Joy-Con Size:
The trailer suggests Joy-Con controllers of similar width but increased height. Our estimations point to 32mm wide and 115mm tall, a 13% increase compared to the originals.
Screen Unit Size:
Subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall—approximately 31% larger than the original. This size comfortably accommodates the 8-inch screen, with estimated bezels of 11mm on the sides and 8mm on the top and bottom.
Conclusion:
While these are estimations, the Genki mock-up provides strong evidence for their accuracy. We anticipate the Switch 2 to be approximately 25% larger than its predecessor. Further confirmation will come with official dimensions and hands-on experiences later this year.
