Apple iPhone 16 Pro

2A compact size is met by powerful internals, a great display, and capable cameras. See it at Best BuySee it at Apple

Product Specifications

  • Screen: 6.3-inch OLED, 1206x2622, 460 ppi, 120Hz refresh rate
  • Processor: A18 Pro
  • Camera: 48-Megapixel Wide, 48-Megapixel Ultrawide, 12-Megapixel Telephoto, 12-Megapixel Selfie
  • Battery: 3,582mAh
  • Weight: 199g (0.44lb)

PROS

  • Powerful performance
  • Elegant design
  • Robust camera system

CONS

  • Camera settings could use some tweaks

The iPhone 16 Pro stands out for bridging the gap between the base iPhone 16 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Its compact form factor is more manageable for one-handed use, yet it retains all the features and camera sensors found in the Pro Max. If you prefer a larger screen, consider upgrading to the iPhone 16 Pro Max for a similar experience.

The iPhone 16 Pro boasts the A18 Pro chip, offering exceptional performance for everyday tasks and gaming. It achieved the highest single-core Geekbench 6 score I've seen in both phones and laptops, paired with a powerful GPU for high frame rates at maximum settings.

Apple's build quality feels luxurious, though color options are not as vibrant. The screen is brilliant, combining high brightness and contrast with a fluid 120Hz refresh rate. Despite Apple's claims about Ceramic Shield glass durability, it can still get scratched, so additional protection is recommended.

The iPhone 16 Pro's cameras excel, particularly the main sensor in low-light conditions. The ultra-wide camera can struggle with softness and noise, possibly due to focusing issues, which can be mitigated with manual focus. The 5x telephoto sensor is great for portraits and distant subjects. The new Camera Control offers shutter-like functionality, though it could be refined in future updates.

Apple iPhone 16

2More affordable than its Pro siblings, the iPhone 16 doesn't make you give up a lot and still delivers excellent performance. See it at Best BuySee it at Apple

Product Specifications

  • Screen: 6.3-inch OLED, 1206x2622, 460 ppi, 120Hz refresh rate
  • Processor: A18
  • Camera: 48-Megapixel Wide, 48-Megapixel Ultrawide, 12-Megapixel Telephoto, 12-Megapixel Selfie
  • Battery: 3,582mAh
  • Weight: 199g (0.44lb)

PROS

  • Excellent performance
  • Fun colors

CONS

  • Ultra-wide and selfie shots can be soft

The iPhone 16 is a standout mid-range option in Apple's lineup. With the introduction of Apple Intelligence, it features the A18 chip, matching the performance of the A18 Pro in the Pro models. The A18 slightly trails the A18 Pro but outperforms the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in Android devices. It handles daily tasks and demanding games like Wuthering Waves with ease, remaining comfortable during extended use.

This model offers vibrant color options, along with classic black and white designs. While it includes Ceramic Shield, additional protection is advisable. Its smaller size is pocket-friendly and easier to handle than the wider Pro Max models.

The iPhone 16's display is sharp and vibrant, though it lacks the Pro models' 120Hz refresh rate. The main camera performs well, capturing vibrant colors and handling low light effectively. However, the ultra-wide and selfie cameras can be soft, likely due to focusing issues that Apple may address in future updates.

  1. iPhone 16e

Best Budget iPhone

Apple iPhone 16e

0The iPhone 16e is Apple's cheapest new option and comes with a potent chip, though some overall trade-offs. See it at Apple

Product Specifications

  • Screen: 6.1-inch OLED, 1170x2532, 60Hz refresh rate
  • Processor: A18
  • Camera: 48-Megapixel Wide, 12-Megapixel Selfie
  • Battery: 4,005mAh
  • Weight: 167g (0.39lb)

PROS

  • Fast chip
  • Lower price than main iPhone lineup

CONS

  • Trims a handful of common iPhone features

If you're seeking a budget iPhone, the iPhone 16e is Apple's most affordable new option at $599, though it comes with some compromises. It features the A18 chip, similar to the iPhone 16 but with one fewer GPU core, providing fast performance and access to Apple Intelligence features. The design has been updated with a larger, sharper 6.1-inch OLED display, an aluminum frame, and Ceramic Shield glass, with base storage increased to 128GB.

However, the iPhone 16e omits several features standard in other non-SE models since the iPhone 12, including MagSafe, wireless charging, mmWave 5G, UWB support, and a second rear camera. These omissions limit its functionality and camera capabilities. If these features are crucial, consider refurbished options like the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 15, available on Amazon for under $500.

  1. OnePlus 13

Best iPhone Alternative

OnePlus 13

0A great design, excellent display, superb performance, and impressive cameras all combine in a discounted flagship that deserves consideration. See it at Best BuySee it at OnePlus

Product Specifications

  • Screen: 6.82-inch OLED, 1440x3168, 510ppi, 120Hz refresh rate
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite
  • Camera: 50-Megapixel Wide, 50-Megapixel Ultrawide, 50-Megapixel Telephoto, 32-Megapixel Selfie
  • Battery: 6,000mAh
  • Weight: 210g (0.46lb)

PROS

  • Great value
  • Fast performance

CONS

  • Software support a little shorter than rivals

The iPhone is renowned for its user-friendly software, reliable cameras, and strong performance. However, if you're open to alternatives and looking to save on premium features, the OnePlus 13 offers an exciting option at $899. It rivals the iPhone 16 Pro Max, providing a larger display, smooth refresh rate, multiple cameras, and advanced processing.

The OnePlus 13's triple-camera setup includes a 50MP telephoto, 50MP main, and 50MP ultra-wide sensors, delivering excellent photos and videos. The front-facing 32MP selfie camera is equally impressive.

The display is nearly as good as the iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a 6.82-inch OLED panel boasting a 3168x1440 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It also conserves power with a 1Hz refresh rate for static content, offering bright peaks and deep blacks.

Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the OnePlus 13's performance is exceptional, nearly matching the iPhone 16 Pro Max in single-core performance, surpassing it in multi-core, and excelling in graphics tests. It's ideal for gaming and features a 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired and 50W wireless charging options.

The OnePlus 13's design is elegant, available in silver and white, silver with vegan leather in blue, or black with a wood grain pattern. It includes an alert slider and offers superior water resistance with IP68 and IP69 ratings.

If you're not committed to iOS, the OnePlus 13 is a compelling alternative worth considering.

Upcoming iPhones

Apple introduced several new models for 2024, including the iPhone 16 series, which brings significant improvements and strong performance. Prices of earlier models have also been reduced. The iPhone 16e was introduced as a more affordable option, replacing the iPhone SE. Leaks suggest the upcoming iPhone 17 lineup might include an iPhone Air.

What to Look for in an Apple iPhone

While the user experience across iPhone models is consistent, the differences between them can affect your choice. Here's what to consider when buying an Apple iPhone in 2025:

Phone Size

Size is crucial for iPhone users. For one-handed use, smaller models like the iPhone 16 or iPhone 14 are ideal. For those with larger hands, the iPhone 16 Plus or iPhone 16 Pro Max offer larger displays and wider builds.

Storage Capacity

Storage is another important factor. If you plan to take many high-resolution photos, the iPhone 16 Pro Max with 1TB of storage is your best bet. Other models start at 128GB, suitable for casual use.

Price

Price ranges from the iPhone 16e at $599 to the fully loaded iPhone 16 Pro Max at $1,599. Regardless of the model, you'll enjoy the same iOS experience and updates for the next five to six years.

Ultimately, the best iPhone depends on your usage. For most, the iPhone 16 Pro offers a balanced choice with its fast processor, excellent camera system, attractive colors, and various storage options at a reasonable price.
