While Magic: The Gathering's high-profile crossovers with franchises like Final Fantasy and Spider-Man have been grabbing headlines, the next set on the horizon, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, is poised to make a significant impact. This set brings us back to the beloved plane of Tarkir, and we're excited to offer an exclusive sneak peek at five cards that are likely to be game-changers at the draft table next month. The expansion is currently available for preorder on Amazon, so don't miss your chance to get in on the action early.

These five cards form what's known as a "cycle," united by shared design elements across each of Magic's colors. They are all affordable, common-rarity creatures that feature an ability linked to one of Tarkir’s three-color clans, along with another that allows you to convert mana into a color from that clan.

Wizards of the Coast Senior Game Designer Adam Prosak explains, “Three-color limited environments require substantial mana fixing at all rarities. We aimed to ensure many decks could access this fixing, leading us to create several designs focused on solving mana issues. These creatures are particularly useful as they enable you to build your board while also developing your mana, unlike tapped lands which only provide mana and can cause you to fall behind.”

Senior Worldbuilding Designer Lauren Bond notes that while the mechanics were the initial focus for this cycle, common cards often serve as a canvas for illustrating the world of the set. She elaborates on how these cards reflect the evolution of Tarkir's clans: “From the passionate and action-oriented Jeskai monks, to the Temur using whispers of magic, the Sultai's Nagas as jungle protectors and avengers, the Mardu showcasing military prowess with supporting roles and varying dragon forms, to the Abzan clerics working to regrow lost kin trees.”

Some recent Magic sets have faced criticism for relying too heavily on tropes or thematic gimmicks, even when revisiting familiar planes. However, Tarkir: Dragonstorm stands out with its more straightforward approach to revisiting Tarkir. Senior Worldbuilding Art Director Forrest Schehl acknowledges the value of such feedback for Wizards of the Coast, but emphasizes that “the top-level pitch for Tarkir was established well before the release of Murders at Karlov Manor and the subsequent sets, and did not change after them.”

Schehl continues, “Our goal was to blend Dragons and Clans in a novel way on Tarkir, with Dragonstorms playing a pivotal role in shaping our approach to this 'return-to'. Lauren and I felt the pressure to do it justice from the outset, striving to craft the next chapter of this cherished plane with authenticity and substance.”

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is now available for preorder, set to launch in both physical and digital formats on April 11, with in-store prerelease events starting on April 4.
