Call of Duty player successfully sued Activision to lift unfair in-game ban

A dedicated gamer, b00lin, waged a 763-day legal battle against Activision to overturn an unwarranted Steam ban. Their compelling account of this protracted fight is detailed in a recent blog post.

The ban stemmed from b00lin playing over 36 hours of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 beta in December 2023. Initially dismissed as a testing error, Activision's refusal to lift the ban spurred b00lin into action. While most would have conceded defeat, b00lin chose to challenge the decision.

Activision's staunch refusal to provide evidence of cheating, citing security protocols, proved a significant hurdle. Even a request for seemingly innocuous details, such as the name of the flagged software, was denied.

The subsequent court case exposed Activision's lack of concrete evidence against b00lin. This highlighted the company's stringent approach to anti-cheat confidentiality. Ultimately, the court ruled in b00lin's favor, mandating Activision to cover legal costs and revoke the ban. This victory was finally achieved in early 2025.
