Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the gaming experience with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive in to discover the exciting features of Civ 7 VR and get the latest updates on the entire Civ 7 series.
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) will be exclusively available on the Meta Quest 3 and 3S platforms. This exciting news was shared by 2K Games and Firaxis Games during the Civ World Summit Event on February 8, 2025, marking the franchise's first venture into virtual and mixed reality gaming.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm on the 2K website, saying, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his confidence in the project, stating, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
Notably, while Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table, allowing players to navigate the game world and strategize as if playing a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to inspect the detailed models of buildings and units or take a bird's-eye view of their empire.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality modes, with the ability to switch seamlessly between them. In VR mode, players find themselves in a majestic museum overlooking a personalized vista based on their chosen leader. In mixed reality, the Command Table integrates with the player's real-world environment.
Civ 7 VR will offer single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer options. Up to four players with Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets can participate in a game, either teaming up against AI opponents or competing directly with other human players. During gameplay, players can see their friends and opponents as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table. An online multiplayer experience requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively addressed the feedback received during Civ 7's early access phase. The official Civ 7 Twitter (X) account announced that the development team is committed to resolving the issues highlighted by players. Early access for those who purchased the Deluxe Edition or Founder's Edition began on February 6, 2025. Since its release, the game has garnered mixed reviews on Steam, with many players expressing concerns about the User Interface, which has made it challenging to access crucial gameplay information.
In response, Firaxis Games has outlined their plan to enhance the game. A top priority is to improve the UI, making interactions more intuitive, enhancing map readability, and addressing areas of polish such as formatting. Additionally, they are looking to implement community-requested features including team additions to multiplayer games, a broader selection of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, which will include UI adjustments, ongoing AI balance improvements, adjustments to diplomacy and crises, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is anticipated to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, with no specific release date announced yet. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently available in early access and will officially launch worldwide on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
