George R. R. Martin Discusses Potential Elden Ring Movie at IGN Fan Fest 2025

Author : Caleb Apr 19,2025

George R. R. Martin, the acclaimed author behind the *Game of Thrones* saga, has tantalized fans with the possibility of an *Elden Ring* movie. Martin, who crafted the rich lore and history for FromSoftware's critically acclaimed game *Elden Ring*, released in 2022, has hinted at ongoing discussions about a cinematic adaptation. Despite his contributions to the game being highlighted in marketing efforts and acknowledged in the game's credits alongside FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki, Martin's potential involvement in a movie project faces a significant hurdle: his ongoing work on *The Winds of Winter*, the long-awaited sixth book in his *A Song of Ice and Fire* series.

During IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin expressed cautious optimism about the film project but was clear about his primary focus. "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of *Elden Ring*," he shared. This isn't the first time he's hinted at such a project, and FromSoftware's president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, has also expressed openness to an adaptation, provided a "very strong partner" is involved to handle the transition to a different medium.

Martin's commitment to his literary work, particularly *The Winds of Winter*, remains his priority. He admitted to being significantly behind schedule, stating, "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do." The wait for *The Winds of Winter* has been a long one, with fans eagerly anticipating its release since the last book, *A Dance With Dragons*, was published in 2011, the same year HBO launched the wildly successful *Game of Thrones* series.

Despite the delays, Martin remains determined to complete his saga, acknowledging the skepticism but maintaining a hopeful outlook: "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late... But that's still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] 'Oh, he’ll never be finished.' Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!”

As for his contributions to *Elden Ring*, Martin elaborated on his role in worldbuilding during an interview with IGN. He described how FromSoftware sought his expertise to flesh out the game's backstory, emphasizing the events that shaped the world thousands of years before the game's present. Martin's involvement was extensive, and while not everything he wrote made it into the game, he suggested there's plenty of material that could be explored in future projects.

The potential for an *Elden Ring* movie is exciting, but fans will have to wait and see how it unfolds, especially given Martin's dedication to his primary literary work. Meanwhile, the gaming community continues to celebrate the depth and complexity of the world Martin helped create in *Elden Ring*.
