Marvel's Small Screen Successes and Setbacks: A Ranking of Disney+ Shows

From the iconic "Incredible Hulk" to the grittier Netflix series featuring Daredevil and Luke Cage, Marvel Comics has a long history of inspiring television adaptations. While previous attempts to integrate these shows into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) often faltered (remember "Runaways" and "Cloak and Dagger"?), 2021 marked a turning point. Marvel Studios launched a wave of interconnected Disney+ series, deeply entwined with the billion-dollar film franchise.

With the recent premiere of "Spider-Man: Freshman Year," the 13th Disney+ Marvel show in just four years, we've compiled a ranking of the preceding 12 series, based on aggregated scores from IGN's Marvel experts. "Spider-Man: Freshman Year"'s placement will be added upon its conclusion.

  1. Secret Invasion

Disney+
Surprisingly, "Secret Invasion," a series based on a pivotal Marvel Comics storyline, received overwhelmingly negative feedback. Director Ali Selim's admission of not reading the source material contributed to the show's disconnect from its potential. While the MCU has successfully incorporated creative liberties, "Secret Invasion" lacked a compelling vision, failing to capture the espionage thriller tone of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier." Slow pacing, a poorly received AI-generated opening, the unceremonious death of a beloved character, and a forgettable new superhero cemented its last-place ranking.

  1. Echo

Disney+
A significant improvement over "Secret Invasion," "Echo" still falls short of the top contenders. Alaqua Cox reprises her role from "Hawkeye," delivering an intimate and action-packed story. The series explores Echo's life on the reservation, balancing her powers, past, and relationship with Kingpin. A shortened episode count left some viewers wanting more, but the series boasts impressive fight sequences, notably a confrontation with Daredevil. Its groundbreaking representation of Indigenous creatives adds significant value.

  1. Moon Knight

Disney+
Starring Oscar Isaac, "Moon Knight" surprisingly ranks lower due to its limited impact on viewers. The series explores the multiple personalities of Marc Spector, blending mystery, mayhem, and surrealism. While featuring elements reminiscent of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "Indiana Jones," and "Legion," and introducing a standout character in Scarlet Scarab, the series couldn't quite reach the top. Despite a strong cast including F. Murray Abraham and Ethan Hawke, it failed to secure a second season.

  1. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Disney+
Despite the on-screen chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier" fell short of expectations. Murky morals, heavy reliance on the Blip storyline, and a focus on espionage over action hindered its success. Production delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic may have also impacted the final product. Nevertheless, the series' narrative elements have become crucial to the current MCU, particularly in relation to the "Thunderbolts" film.
