PS5 Disc Drive Shortage Persists, Frustrating PS5 Pro Owners
Since the launch of the PS5 Pro, a shortage of standalone PS5 disc drives continues to plague gamers. Scalpers are exacerbating the problem, driving prices far above retail. Both US and UK PlayStation Direct stores remain consistently out of stock, with any available units disappearing instantly. Sony has yet to offer an official statement regarding this ongoing issue.
The shortage stems from the PS5 Pro's design: it's sold without a built-in disc drive, making the previously optional accessory a necessity for those upgrading. This increased demand, coupled with the PS5 Pro's November 2024 launch, has created a perfect storm for scalpers. The situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with drives being snatched up and resold at significantly inflated prices. This adds insult to injury for consumers already facing the high cost of the PS5 Pro itself.
Unfortunately, relief isn't on the horizon. As of this writing, PlayStation Direct in both the US and UK remains devoid of disc drives. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive stock, the limited availability is dwarfed by the persistent demand.
Scalpers and Sony's Silence
Scalpers have capitalized on this demand, hoarding drives rather than the consoles themselves. Sony's silence on the matter is striking, especially considering their efforts to maintain PS5 production during the pandemic.
The PS5 Pro's omission of a disc drive has been a contentious point since its September unveiling. The already substantial cost of the console increases significantly with the addition of the separate disc drive, especially when purchased from official Sony sources. With scalpers driving up prices, many PS5 fans are left with little option but to wait for improved supply and reduced demand – a resolution that remains elusive.
