Embarking on the perilous journey through the Living Lands in Avowed is far easier with the right company. Fortunately, you won't be traveling alone! Avowed offers four unique Companions, each boasting distinct personalities and upgradeable abilities. Let's meet the team:
Avowed Companions
Kai

Kai is one of your earliest allies. While you meet other characters in the tutorial, Kai is the first true Companion joining your party. You'll recruit him early in the game, at Dawnshore's port near Paradis. He'll approach you on the dock, and you'll team up to find the Ambassador and Cleric. He remains a valuable party member until you've recruited three Companions; after that, you can swap him out at a Party Camp.
A fierce ex-mercenary with a surprisingly soft side, Kai serves as a formidable tank in combat. He deals significant damage and sustains it well. His fire abilities are also useful for removing obstacles like cobwebs and roots, revealing hidden paths and loot.
Kai's Upgradeable Abilities:
- Fire and Ire (Active): A powerful blunderbuss shot that stuns and taunts a single enemy for 10 seconds.
- Unbending Defense (Active): Regenerates health and increases damage reduction by 25%.
- Leap of Daring (Active): A powerful leap that stuns and taunts nearby enemies.
- Second Win (Passive): Revives Kai at 50% health when he reaches zero.
Marius

Marius, your second Companion, shares a history with Kai and is also found in Dawnshore. You'll meet him at a bar, where you can choose to talk your way out of trouble or engage in combat with some aggressive NPCs. He joins your party immediately after this encounter.
Marius is a skilled hunter and tracker, a trait reflected in his personality, story, and gameplay. His Hunter Sense helps you locate loot and crafting materials. In combat, he utilizes a bow and arrow, daggers, and nature-based traps to ensnare enemies.
Marius' Upgradeable Abilities:
- Binding Roots (Active): Roots an enemy in place for 8 seconds.
- Heart Seeker (Active): A piercing shot that always hits its target, ignoring obstacles.
- Shadow Step (Active): Vanishes and reappears near an enemy to attack (repeats up to 3 times).
- Wounding Shots (Passive): Attacks inflict bleed accumulation.
Giatta

Giatta, recruited later in the Emerald Stair region at the Fior settlement, is an animancer who practices a controversial form of magic.
Giatta's animancer abilities are crucial to solving the spiritual mysteries of Avowed's main quest. In combat, she provides support, healing, shielding, and buffing allies. Her Spectral Jolt ability powers Essence Generators, opening up new exploration paths and hidden loot.
Giatta's Upgradeable Abilities:
- Purification (Active): Heals all allies by 25% of their maximum health.
- Barrier (Active): Provides allies with a temporary health shield for 20 seconds.
- Acceleration (Active): Increases ally movement and attack speed for 15 seconds.
- Reconstruction (Passive): Attacks heal allies a small amount.
Yatzli

Yatzli, the final Companion, joins your party during a main quest in Shatterscarp's Thirdborn city, though she can be encountered earlier.
Like Giatta, Yatzli is a magic user, but focuses on dealing damage. Her spells inflict substantial damage to single targets and offer effective crowd control. She also uses magic to clear obstacles.
Yatzli's Upgradeable Abilities:
- Essence Explosion (Active): An arcane explosion dealing powerful damage.
- Minoletta's Missile Battery (Active): A volley of homing arcane missiles.
- Arduos Delay of Motion (Active): Slows an enemy for 10 seconds.
- Blast (Passive): Attacks create a small area-of-effect explosion.
