Ryan Gosling in Talks to Star in Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film
Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, is reportedly on the verge of embarking on a journey to a galaxy far, far away, bringing Ryan Gosling along for the ride. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Levy's Star Wars project is in negotiations with Gosling for the lead role. Levy has been developing this film since 2022, with a script finalized last year. He's reuniting with Jonathan Tropper, screenwriter of This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, both Levy-directed films.
Plot details remain tightly under wraps. The identity of Gosling's character and the film's temporal setting within the Star Wars timeline are currently unknown. However, it's confirmed to be outside the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter also indicates the project is intended as a standalone film, ruling out a trilogy (at least for now).

Gosling's potential involvement has significantly accelerated the project's timeline. While Levy was previously attached to direct a boy band film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, THR suggests that Gosling's confirmation would prioritize the Star Wars movie, pushing production to commence this fall.
The Star Wars franchise is currently undergoing a transition. Following the cancellation of The Acolyte, Disney+ recently concluded its latest series, Skeleton Crew. On the film front, Dave Filoni's Mandalorian and Grogu movie completed filming in December, slated for release on May 22, 2026. A new trilogy focusing on Daisy Ridley's Rey is also in the works.
A release date for Levy's Star Wars film remains unannounced, pending its progress this year. For a comprehensive overview of the Star Wars universe's upcoming releases, consult our preview of Star Wars in 2025.
