Since its successful 2022 relaunch, 2K's WWE series has consistently refined its gameplay, adding features to justify annual releases. WWE 2K25 promises more iterations, including a new online world called The Island, revamped story, general manager, and Universe modes, a new Bloodline Rules hardcore match type, and more. However, my preview focused primarily on the core gameplay (largely unchanged) and the revised Showcase Mode.
While I couldn't explore the major new additions, several smaller improvements impressed me. I'm confident WWE 2K25 will be another successful evolution of the series.
WWE 2K25's Showcase Mode centers on The Bloodline, highlighting Roman Reigns and past generations like The Wild Samoans and The Rock. It features three match types: recreating history, creating history, and altering history. I experienced recreating Nia Jax's 2024 Queen of the Ring victory, creating a Wild Samoans vs. Dudley Boyz match, and altering a Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins bout. Each offered unique perspectives, improving upon last year's Showcase Mode. However, minor issues remain.
WWE 2K24's Showcase Mode, like its predecessor, overused lengthy real-life footage ("Slingshot"). While not entirely solved, progress has been made. The reliance on real-life footage is reduced, with key moments recreated in-engine, providing a smoother experience. These sequences are also shorter, minimizing time away from gameplay. However, in my Nia Jax match, control was removed during the final pin, an aspect I hope is improved.

The checklist system from previous Showcase Modes, requiring specific maneuvers to trigger cutscenes, returns but is refined. Optional timed objectives reward cosmetics, but failure no longer penalizes players—a significant improvement. The ability to alter historic match outcomes, like changing the Roman Reigns vs. Seth Rollins match result, is a fantastic addition for dedicated fans.
WWE 2K25's core gameplay remains largely unchanged from WWE 2K24, which is not necessarily a drawback. However, notable additions include the return of chain wrestling, a mini-game allowing players to gain an advantage during grapples. The submission mini-game also returns, but is thankfully optional, as are other quick-time events. Weapon throwing returns with expanded backstage brawls and new environments, including the WWE archives, offering a fun and nostalgic experience.
Intergender matches are finally available, along with the largest roster yet (300+ wrestlers), significantly expanding match possibilities. The Prime Hydration Station bottle even serves as a weapon.

I also played the new Underground match type—a ropeless exhibition match in a Fight Club-like setting with lumberjacks. More details will be shared later.
WWE 2K25 builds upon a solid foundation, adding smart refinements rather than revolutionary changes. The impact of the unplayed new modes remains to be seen, but my experience suggests a strong, incremental improvement to an already excellent series.
