DC Studios co-chief James Gunn recently revealed that the highly anticipated The Authority film has been placed on the back burner. This comes as a surprise, considering its initial announcement as a major project within the Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters DC Universe reboot two years ago. The Authority, featuring the notoriously brutal superhero team from the WildStorm Universe, was initially described by Gunn as a "big movie." However, the project has encountered significant hurdles.
During a DC Studios presentation, Gunn cited the project's complexity and the impact of Amazon's successful The Boys as contributing factors to the delay. He explained that adapting The Authority in a landscape already shaped by similar, brutally violent superhero stories presented a unique challenge. Further complicating matters is the ongoing development of other DCU projects and the desire to ensure the stories of already established characters are interwoven seamlessly. As a result, the film is currently less of a priority.
One character from The Authority, the technologically gifted Angela Spica (also known as The Engineer), is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. The Engineer, arguably the team's most powerful member, possesses abilities including self-duplication, technopathy, genius-level intellect, and radio-induced telepathy. The Authority isn't the only Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters project facing setbacks. Gunn mentioned that Waller, a spin-off of his Peacemaker series, has experienced some delays. However, he expressed optimism about Booster Gold, stating that its development is progressing well. Similarly, Paradise Lost remains a high priority, with the pilot script currently in progress.
Regarding Swamp Thing, DC Studios is willing to wait for director James Mangold to become available. Safran explained that Mangold's commitment to other projects, including a Star Wars film, necessitates a delay. However, Gunn clarified that Swamp Thing isn't crucial to the overarching narrative of the DCU.
