Deadlock's major update, its first in months, is shaking things up with a significant map redesign: a shift from four lanes to three. Read on for details on this game-changing update and other recent developments.
Deadlock Announces Major Update
From Four Lanes to Three: A Map Overhaul
Deadlock's latest update dramatically simplifies its map structure, reducing lanes from four to three. Valve announced the comprehensive rework on Steam on February 26, 2025, detailing extensive map-wide changes. These changes encompass visuals, building layouts, pathways, neutral camps, air vents, breakables, power-up buffs, juke spots, and even the mid-boss. The unique third-person perspective of Deadlock, combined with the previous four-lane design, presented a complexity this update aims to streamline.
Further improvements include adjustments to enemy trooper farming. Players no longer need to last-hit enemies to summon Soul Orbs, significantly easing early-game farming. The patch notes also highlight improvements to netcode and client performance.
A Vital Update for Deadlock's Future
This update is poised to revitalize Deadlock and reignite player interest. While the game saw a peak of 171,490 concurrent players in September 2024, player numbers have since dropped significantly, to approximately 17,000 in the past month—a 90% decrease.
In January 2025, Valve developer Yoshi explained the shift in update frequency on Deadlock's Discord server. The previous two-week update cycle proved too restrictive for implementing desired changes. Yoshi stated, "Going forward, major patches will no longer be on a fixed schedule. These patches will be larger than before, albeit a little bit more spaced out, and hotfixes will continue to be released as needed. We look forward to fleshing out the game in the new year."
