Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Transition to Open Queue
Overwatch 2's popular 6v6 playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will shift to an open queue format. This positive response fuels speculation about its potential permanent integration into the game.
The 6v6 mode, initially introduced during last November's Overwatch Classic event, quickly gained traction. Its first run, though brief, established it as a top-performing mode. A second playtest, beginning December 17th, was also planned for a limited time, omitting certain classic hero abilities.
However, sustained player interest prompted the extension. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. Until mid-season, it will retain its current structure. Thereafter, it transitions to open queue, requiring each team to field 1-3 heroes per class.
The Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring appeal of 6v6 in Overwatch 2 isn't unexpected. Since the sequel's 2022 launch, the return of 6v6 has been a frequently voiced player request. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, while a significant change, has elicited varied responses.
The extended playtest reignites hopes for 6v6's permanent inclusion, potentially even within Overwatch 2's competitive playlist. This possibility gains momentum as the playtesting phase concludes.
