The Blood of Dawnwalker: A Dark Fantasy RPG Unveiled
Rebel Wolves' The Blood of Dawnwalker, revealed at its January 16th game reveal event, is an open-world, narrative-driven dark fantasy action RPG set in the fictional 14th-century European land of Vale Sangora.
Meet Coen, the Dawnwalker
Players embody Coen, a Dawnwalker—a being existing between human and vampire—whose life is a constant struggle against the encroaching darkness. Narrative director Jakub Szamalek describes Coen as a relatable, emotionally vulnerable protagonist, a departure from typical game heroes. Coen's quest: save his family within a 30-day/night timeframe, against the backdrop of a crumbling civilization ruled by the ancient vampire Brencis. While the game features a time constraint, the developers emphasize a flexible gameplay pace.
Coen possesses supernatural abilities, including enhanced agility and limited magical capabilities focused on occult practices rather than flamboyant spells. The game's magic system emphasizes rituals, amulets, and summonings, offering a unique approach to fantasy combat.
A Narrative Sandbox: Choice and Consequence
Despite the central quest, The Blood of Dawnwalker prioritizes player agency. The game is designed as a "narrative sandbox," offering multiple paths to achieve the main objective. Player choices will significantly impact the world and its inhabitants, resulting in a non-linear storyline.
To maintain the immersive single-player experience, multiplayer or co-op modes are absent. However, the game will feature romanceable characters from various races, including uriashi, kobolds, and potentially werewolves, adding depth to Coen's journey.
Developed by Rebel Wolves, a studio composed of former CD Projekt Red developers (known for The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077), The Blood of Dawnwalker is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A release date has yet to be announced.
