EA Unveils Battlefield Labs and Battlefield Studios for Upcoming Title
EA has offered the first official look at its new Battlefield game, alongside details about its player testing program, Battlefield Labs, and its newly formed Battlefield Studios.
A short pre-alpha gameplay video accompanied the announcement, showcasing the progress being made. The video also revealed the four studios collaborating on the project: DICE (Stockholm), Motive, Ripple Effect, and Criterion.
The division of labor is as follows: DICE is handling multiplayer development; Motive is working on single-player missions and multiplayer maps; Ripple Effect focuses on attracting new players; and Criterion is developing the single-player campaign.
The new Battlefield marks a return to a traditional linear single-player campaign, a departure from the multiplayer-only Battlefield 2042. EA is currently in a crucial development phase and is seeking player feedback through Battlefield Labs to refine the game before release. Participants will be required to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).
EA stated that Battlefield Labs will test core gameplay elements, including combat, destruction, weapons, vehicles, gadgets, maps, modes, and squad play. Conquest and Breakthrough modes will also be tested, alongside refinements to the class system. Initial testing will involve a few thousand players in Europe and North America, expanding to tens of thousands later.
This ambitious project follows the closure of Ridgeline Games, a studio previously working on a standalone single-player Battlefield title. The new game will feature a modern setting, a shift from previous installments, and will incorporate ship-to-ship and helicopter combat, as well as natural disaster elements.
The return to a modern setting, inspired by the popular Battlefield 3 and 4 era, aims to recapture the core Battlefield experience while expanding the franchise's offerings to attract a broader audience. The game will revert to 64-player maps and eliminate the Specialist system from Battlefield 2042.
EA has yet to announce a release date, platforms, or the official title for the new Battlefield.
