Fans of the Monster Hunter series have often expressed mixed feelings about the weapon designs in Monster Hunter: World, leading to speculation about what Monster Hunter Wilds might bring to the table. While we've caught glimpses of some weapons in Wilds, it hasn't been enough to fully understand their design philosophy—until now. Yuya Tokuda, the director of Monster Hunter Wilds, has provided clarity on this matter.
When discussing the Hope series armor and weapons, Tokuda stated: "Incidentally, weapon designs in Monster Hunter: World generally retained a certain form, but they featured a customized appearance based on which monster materials were used. However, in Wilds, each weapon has its own unique design."
This direct comparison to Monster Hunter: World's approach clearly resolves any concerns about weapon designs looking too similar in Monster Hunter Wilds. While some weapons in Monster Hunter: World did evolve into unique forms, many remained visually similar even at their highest upgrade levels. For instance, the final aqua line Sword and Shield closely resembles the final Pukei-Pukei sword and shield, and the final bone line long sword is nearly identical to the final Jyuratodus long sword, as seen in the image below, taken from the initial release of Monster Hunter: World on PS4.
In contrast, the weapon designs showcased in Monster Hunter Wilds are undeniably distinct, as you can see in the slideshow below.
