Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging, But Other Asynchronous Features Enhanced
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki, is purely practical. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has fostered significant community interaction, from helpful hints to humorous observations. However, its omission in Nightreign aims to create a more streamlined and intense experience.
While the messaging system is absent, other asynchronous features are not only returning but being improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will be enhanced, allowing players to learn from and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades.
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing consistent intensity and multiplayer engagement. This focus, along with the game's three-day structure, contributes to a more dynamic and less downtime-heavy experience.
Nightreign, revealed at The Game Awards 2024, is targeting a 2025 release, though a precise date remains unannounced.
