The team at MercurySteam, comprised of former members of Rebel Act Studios, brings a rich heritage to their latest project. Known for developing the cult classic Severance: Blade of Darkness released in 2001, these developers are celebrated for their groundbreaking combat system. This system, which allowed players to dismember enemies, added a layer of brutality and realism that set the game apart. Severance has been a significant source of inspiration for MercurySteam's new venture, Blades of Fire.
While rooted in their past achievements, the developers have also looked to contemporary action-adventure titles for inspiration. Specifically, they have drawn from the cinematic combat and richly detailed world of Santa Monica Studio's God of War reboot. Their goal is to merge fast-paced action with RPG elements, crafting a gaming experience that is both engaging and immersive.
A standout feature of Blades of Fire is its innovative weapon crafting system. Players will have the ability to forge their own blades, with options to customize attributes such as length, weight, durability, and balance. This system empowers players to create weapons that perfectly suit their individual combat styles, adding a personal touch to the gameplay.
The narrative of Blades of Fire centers around the warrior Aran de Lira, who embarks on a quest to thwart a cunning queen with the power to transmute metal into stone. Throughout his journey, Aran will encounter 50 distinct enemy types, each necessitating a tailored combat strategy.
Blades of Fire is set to launch on May 22, 2025, and will be available on PC (via the Epic Games Store), Xbox Series, and PS5.
