PlayStation's New Studio Takes on Bungie's "Gummy Bears" MOBA
A PlayStation studio has reportedly taken over development of Bungie's enigmatic MOBA, codenamed "Gummy Bears." Initially conceived at Bungie, this project, rumored to be at least three years in the making, is now under the direction of a newly formed, approximately 40-person PlayStation subsidiary. While a release date remains distant, the game's unique features are starting to surface.
Unlike typical MOBAs, "Gummy Bears" is said to borrow a key mechanic from the Super Smash Bros. franchise: a percentage-based damage system instead of traditional health bars. This system influences knockback distance, with high enough damage potentially launching characters off the map.
The game will reportedly feature the standard MOBA character classes—Attack, Defense, and Support—alongside multiple game modes. Its visual style is described as inviting, colorful, and "lo-fi," a stark contrast to Bungie's previous, more mature titles. This stylistic choice aims to attract a younger audience than Bungie typically targets.
The shift in development from Bungie to the new PlayStation studio aligns with recent reports of a new PlayStation development facility in Los Angeles. While "Gummy Bears" is still in its development phase, its unique mechanics and target audience suggest a fresh and potentially groundbreaking addition to the PlayStation lineup.
